In one of the most consequential telecommunications breakthroughs for rural Africa, Starlink and Airtel Africa have officially initiated commercial Direct-to-Cell (D2C) services starting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Unlike conventional satellite broadband that necessitates expensive terminal dishes and steady electrical grids, D2C technology connects standard 4G and 5G smartphones directly to low-Earth orbit satellites. Citizens in isolated mining communities, national parks, and farming villages can now send SMS messages and make emergency financial transfers with zero cellular tower presence.

The initiative marks a sharp pivot in African telecommunications regulation. Whereas multiple central and West African regulators initially viewed satellite internet with suspicion, governments in Côte d'Ivoire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have established proactive licensing frameworks recognizing satellite's vital role in national digital inclusion.

Starlink's registered African customer base has climbed past 300,000 active subscribers, with direct cellular coverage set to expand across 14 additional Airtel markets over the coming twelve months.
